Lap times plunged in qualifying for this year's Marlboro Masters of F3 as
the drivers wrung every last thousandth of a second out of their Kumho
ECSTA slicks. No less than 20 drivers broke the 1 minute 34 second
barrier with Brazil’s Nelson Piquet grabbing pole position in an exciting
final qualifying session on Saturday.
His time of 1 minute 33.115 seconds was just two hundredths of a second
quicker than Formula Euroseries title contender Christian Klien's
who joins him on the front row. Current Euroseries points leader Ryan
Briscoe threatens in third place on the grid.
Son of triple world champion Nelson senior, Piquet will rely on a good set up for his car in the race tomorrow and, despite using his allocation of tyres during qualifying, is confident his strategy will pay off. In contrast Briscoe plans to take advantage of new rubber in the early stages of the race.
Kumho became the Official Tyre Supplier to the Marlboro Masters for the first time in 2002 as part of a five year contract with the Circuit Park Zandvoort.
Forty seven drivers from no less than 20 countries ran on Kumho's ECSTA racing tyres during qualifying, each car having been allocated a total of 12 slick tyres for the race weekend. The tyres, all specially made for the Marlboro Masters, were fitted by Kumho Motorsport on Thursday and Friday at their race service facility in the Zandvoort paddock. Kumho expects to supply and fit more than 800 tyres throughout the weekend.
