Nanoparticles and their possible use in tyres

Traditionally the tyre compounder has been required to possess the skills necessary to be able to adjust and balance various physical properties when formulating a tread compound for a particular end use. To be able to alter the so called 'magic triangle' of key physical properties, traction, abrasion resistance and rolling resistance to suit the intended application has been the challenge set before generations of tyre compounders. Using conventional tyre materials such as polymers and fillers, it has always been difficult to break the triangle and to alter each key property in isolation.
The paper available for download here considers how it might be possible to use an emerging, and novel nanoscale material technology to assist the compounder in achieving a better balance of physical properties in a typical passenger car tyre tread compound. In effect, how nanotechnology and one particular nanomaterial, when used as a compound additive, may have an application in terms of breaking the compounder's magic triangle.
This paper describes the nanomaterials that have been evaluated by Kumho to date. It also covers the way they are currently being studied in modern, silica filled tyre tread compounds in order to alter some of their key physical properties. Also explained is the actual effect these nanomaterials have been shown to have on those key physical properties, and more importantly the benefits these changes offer to the tyre end user in terms of potentially improved levels of grip and lower vehicle fuel consumption.
